Spells by Aprilynne Pike

Goodreads Page

Summary (via the author's website): "Six months have passed since Laurel saved the gateway to the faerie realm of Avalon. Now she must spend her summer there, honing her skills as a Fall faerie. But her human family and friends are still in mortal danger--and the gateway to Avalon is more compromised than ever.

When it comes time to protect those she loves, will she depend on David, her human boyfriend, for help? Or will she turn to Tamani, the electrifying faerie with whom her connection is undeniable?"

Review: So, let me say this. I hate David. Not personally, in the "I want him to die" sense. But... I don't want Laurel to want him. He's boring! And if she chooses him, she, by extension, becomes boring. And if there's anything I'm opposed to, it's boring people.

Anyway, aside from that beef, I kind of liked Spells. I was very into it. It was easy to read, and it went very quickly. There was a little action, but not too much, which I liked, and ... yeah. I find I don't have too much to say about it, actually. Aside from the whole David thing.

  2. I actually haven't gotten started on this series yet, I guess I need to...it just hasn't really jumped out at me so far! There are a lot of "eh" reviews out there.

  3. I have Spells on the TBR shelf and hope to get to it this summer. I actually like David in Wings, so I am wondering what has changed. Guess I will move it a few books and see. Thanks for the review.

  4. I love the cover but now I don't know if I want to read it after the boringness of David's character. I haven't read the previous books so should I start with those first before jumping into this one?
    Let me know.

  5. Allison - It's kind of an "eh" series for me, too. I put it in the same category as Twilight -- I know they're not particularly good per se, but they're easy to read and very addictive.

Jan - I can't figure out whether my problem is with David himself or with the fact that she's choosing him over Tamani, who I like a lot more (when he's not moping, that is, which he tends to do a lot because the girl he obsesses over picked someone else to be her boyfriend).

PK - I would start with Wings, but that's because I tend to be pretty strict about starting a series with Book 1. It's not super necessary, though; you can still figure out what's going on with everything.
